Christian are called Children of God because of Jesus’ prefect life and crucifixion. There is nothing that can be done to earn such an honor. Jesus bestows this honor through his work as a prefect sacrifice. Charles Spurgeon teaches that we are ‘Devoid of honor’, when we are ashamed of being called children of God. However, God is never ashamed to call us his children, and Jesus is never ashamed to call us brothers and sisters, even though we buy into the world’s lies that we should be ashamed to be called God’s children.
It’s important to understand that all men aren’t brothers in Christ! Matthew 7 comes to mind. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ (22) Image preforming great works in vain, such as casting out demons and preforming miracles in Jesus’ name. It’s to these people Jesus will say, “I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.” (23)
Don’t miss irony in this passage. The same people who shame you because of your identity in Christ will on Judgement day will try to pass a children of God by demonstrating works they vainly preformed in Jesus name. In this light, should we worry about the opinions and insults from these people?
